COLLEGE

1.      End of Year Party

We will be celebrating the end of a great year together in style with a Vienna-themed garden and cocktail party on the 27th of June.

You can look forward to:

*live music

*themed drinks, canapés and desserts

*Viennese Waltz demonstrations and lessons by the OU ballroom dance club

We will start at 6pm on the JDP lawn with a festive reception and some group photos. If you need to come later than 6, that’s also fine (do let us know if you’ll be later than 8pm for ticketing purposes).

All St Hilda’s MCR members are invited, and can bring 1 guest who is not an MCR member.

There is no dress code: you can let the Viennese theme inspire you and dress for ballroom dancing, but not dressing up at all is also perfectly fine.

Please sign up using this google form:

One of the questions is about your interest in the dance lesson. Just to be clear: you do not need to formally sign up in order to take part in this and there is also no extra charge. But because of the size of the JDP auditorium, we might need to have two teaching sessions to accommodate everybody, so it will be useful for us to have a rough idea how many of you want to learn the waltz with us.

Signing up early is recommended, as college enforces strict capacity limits for the JDP. Tickets cost £6 or £3 if you don’t want alcohol (please indicate this on your payment) and you can pay by transfer to:

UNIVERSITY

2.      “Like a Chemist from Canada: Shostakovich, Isaiah Berlin and Oxford.” Play, 3rd July.

What: play “Like a Chemist from Canada: Shostakovich, Isaiah Berlin and Oxford.”

Where: Sheldonian Theatre

When: Friday 3 July, 7:30pm

Early bird tickets: until 15 June

You are warmly invited to the upcoming play “Like a Chemist from Canada: Shostakovich, Isaiah Berlin and Oxford” taking place at the Sheldonian Theatre on 3 July.

The play tells a story about the visit of famous Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich to Oxford University to receive a Honorary Doctorate of Music in 1958 by invitation of Sir Isaiah and Lady Berlin. From the initial invitation by Oxford to Shostakovich in Moscow, the story is a fascinating, humorous and poignant portrayal of the clash of two distinct, and distinctly insular, worlds: the Byzantine rituals of Oxford University and the unsmiling officialdom of Soviet Russia. The story is based on the official correspondence surrounding that visit and reminds us of the value of art in the Cold War period. The play is followed by a recital by internationally acclaimed pianist Colin Stone and The Sacconi Quartet.

There is a limited number of £5 tickets for students exclusively and early bird ticket prices are live until 15 June.
